Epic & Tournament Event Guides

Tournaments, events and clan hunts are absolutely essential to gain the resources necessary to advance in the game.

It’s a good idea to scan upcoming tournaments, and begin to build your army and save silver in advance for the ones you want to hit.  Reserve the use of your resources for the most valuable tournaments. The Total Battle Facebook Page has a monthly calendar showing upcoming events (except for Random events like Ragnarok).

For the highest value tournaments, it’s a good rule of thumb to train at least 10 times the number of troops you’re going to send at one time – that allows you 10 hits using the same troop settings, without having to take time to rebuild your army or being tempted to throw the kitchen sink at the beast instead of sticking to your max VP groupings.

There are no events you should always skip – usually it’s a good idea to hit every event a few times, at the very least you almost always get VP, XP, and armour fragments.  However, the events listed in the Skip section have diminishing returns after only a few hits. Use your resources carefully – know your goals and limits and stop when you hit them.

ALSO ALWAYS TURN ON all XP, VP, Army bonuses you have before starting to hit any Epic. In the Fenrir shop in Ragnarok you can buy week long bonuses that are a good deal. The Premium packages have nice bonuses for army/crypting/economy, but are Canadian $6.99/week.  If that’s affordable for you it’s recommended BUT AS ALWAYS be careful with your spending. We’re trying to get all of us to the point where you don’t have to pay to play.

The following list is just a suggestion on which to hit the hardest – there will be detailed info on each event to follow.

Event & Tournament Participation Guide

Required Events & Tournaments

  1. Ancients – Ancients’ Treasure (vaults) & Rise of Ancients (Tinman) – required by our clan
  2. Ragnarok - great for the items in the shops, plus VP, XP – mandatory for clan & individual
  1. Trade Routes - if you have silver and need mercenaries. And you always need mercenaries...
  2. Ruthless Slaughter – revive with silver instead of gold - USE THIS TIME WISELY - do clan hunts, citadels, CP runs
  3. Doomsday - great for VP
  4. Clan Hunts for Runic Squads
  5. Clan Hunts for Heroic Monsters
  6. Hellforge - only if you need quality gear
  7. Clash of Kingdoms (KvK) – coordinated effort with clan and kingdom is needed to be truly effective, but benefits include improved kingdom tournament rewards and clan reputation, and you need KvK trophies to make Tournament Armour. Can be expensive if you're not smart about it, or just unlucky, but is worth participating in.
  8. Crypt Raiders - no costs other than time and tar

Optional Events & Tournaments

  1. Arachne’s Swarm – 8 instead of 4 groups of monsters - tough crowd and expensive, worth it only if you know when and how to hit
  2. Armageddon – Good for levelling up hero, but not much else
  3. The Great Hunt - if clan is going for top 100 it is important, if not you can skip it
  4. Clash for the Throne (COT) – can be expensive and drag clan into war. In our Kingdom, since Kings are appointed by rotation, the only real benefit is the title/bonus for being a senator.
  5. Shadow City - only  if you need CP and aren’t getting it any other way

Ancients (Clan Event)

The Ancients Tournament is a two-part event that occurs every 6 days. Clan participation is mandatory. The Ancients tournament is the least expensive event for individuals to earn Valor Points (VP) and Experience Points (XP), and has great benefits for the clan if all clan members meet their personal goals to unlock all clan chests.  If the clan places in the top 100, there is a good haul of monster coins, scientific tractates, and clan chests.
The tournament is in two parts: Ancient Treasures (Vaults) on day one, and Rise of the Ancients (Tinman) after.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT ANCIENTS IS THAT IT IS A TEAM EVENT! Everyone must work together.

ANCIENTS’ TREASURE - VAULTS

On the first day, you’ll earn 6 treasure map fragments for completing daily quests. Every time you get enough activity points to open one of the small chests or ancient scrolls showing above your daily quest list, you’ll receive one fragment.  When you have all 6 map fragments, go to the Ancients’ Treasure tournament page, combine the 6 fragments to spawn the vault – always put your vault to the highest level available to you, and then click “find” to get the location of your vault. Copy the location and post in the clan’s Towers chat.

YOU WILL NOT NECESSARILY KILL YOUR OWN VAULT.

Killing the Vaults does not give a player any Valor Points (VP), Conquest Points (CP) or Experience Points (XP).  All they do is give Ancients’ Coins, which will be used to set the number and duration of Tinman summons your clan can get, and bonuses that might be applied. If you do kill a vault and get some coins, always check to see which of the 3 artifacts (book, figurine, time) the clan is putting our coins toward BEFORE you upgrade any clan artifacts.

The Vaults must be killed by the clan as inexpensively as possible. This is done by:
To give yourself time to enter the optimal combination of troops, create a raid with maximum time possible – use this time to enter troop composition – then cancel the raid. The game will remember your troop composition when you launch the raid next time, and you and your allied raiders will be well prepared, without anyone panicking and sending an insufficient army. Keep hitting the same level vaults until they’re all gone, then start another level, and adjust army as necessary.

Follow these guidelines for killing the Vaults:

NO CATAPULTS (CATS) AT ALL !!
5 PLAYERS IN EVERY RAID (Unless higher level players can carry a very large army)
Good Captains: Amanitore, Hercules, Beowulf, and Cleopatra, or if you don’t have these, send the strongest captain you have for the troop types you’re sending.

Levels 10-19: No melee (spearmen).
One or two G5 players in each raid.
Each G5: minimum army of 1000 flying, 2000 horses, 4000 archers.

Levels 20 - 29:  Mounted and flying only. No melee (spearmen) or ranged (archers).
Only G5-G7 in the raid.
G6/7: minimum army of 2000 flying, 4000 horses.
G5’s participating: keep army size lower than G6/7 so that G5s don’t hit first.

Levels 30 - 39:  Ranged (archers), flying and Epic Hunter mercs only. Exclude mounted (riders).
Only G6-G7 in the raid.
G7: army minimum 2000 flying, 5000 spearmen, 4000 archers.

-Levels 40+:  Mostly flying and Epic Hunter mercs, but can send everything, lots of stacks.
G7/G8s only. As many as you can march with.

RISE OF THE ANCIENTS  - TINMAN

The Rise of the Ancients (or "Tinman" as we call it) provides the most reliable rewards for the clan, and it is a clan requirement that everyone participate to the best of their ability.
The Tinman can only be summoned by the clan leader or one of the superiors.  We always set a schedule for times when the Tinman will be summoned, to try to make sure that people from different time zones can participate.
Summoning times:  When the time says +X number of minutes or hours, count X number of hours since the tournament started.  It’s always a 24 hour clock, so +1 would be 23:00.  When the time says -X, it means time before next reset, so the summons will be whenever X hours/minutes are remaining on the clock (i.e. -3 hrs will be when the clock says the event ends in 3 hours). Personally I’ve never understood why we don’t always just post the time before next reset, because that’s the time that’s always showing on the clock.  But, this is how we do it so don’t mess with it.
The very first time your clan fights a Tinman, its level and strength depends on the troop level of the strongest player in your clan. After that, the Tinman’s level increases every time he is defeated and will continue the next tournament at the highest level you haven’t yet defeated.
Every time the Tinman is summoned, the cost per summons is set by the troop level of the weakest player in your clan.  If you have players with Level 1 or 2 guardsmen in the clan, you will not be able to get as many summons as if you have only higher level guardsmen in the clan. This is one reason why upgrading your guardsmen is so important to the clan’s prosperity.
Each player can send 1 captain at a time to fight the Tinman. There is a time limit to kill it. A countdown clock beside the Tinman shows how much time is remaining.
BEST CAPTAINS FOR THE EPIC ANCIENT SQUAD: Hercules, Cleopatra, Beowulf, Aydae, Alexander, Wu Zetian, Leonidas, Minamato.  Do not use Amanitore, Ramses II, or Helen unless you’re just doing it to level them up.

Ragnarok Guide

Ragnarok is always worth hitting hard.  A few days before it begins, start building your army and stockpiling silver.  To get the most out of it, you can also refrain from collecting gold, sacred potions, and mercenary (Epic Monster Hunter) rewards from the triumphal tournament, or you can just be skimpy with these until Ragnarok. But if you’re like me you should just not open them at all, so you’re not tempted to use them.

This tournament is arguably the best one to participate in, but there are a few tricks to it.  It consists of two different epic squads, Jormungander which you have to attack as a clan in raids, and Fenrir, which you attack individually.  For each monster you will accumulate coins that you can spend in the corresponding shop. Both shops have good rewards, but you must hit Jomungander first to get an XP bonus for your Fenrir attacks.

PRO TIP: If you’re close to levelling up your Guardsmen (ex. G3 to G4), wait till after Ragnarok begins. Your personal goals depend on your level at the start of the tournament. So start as a G3, upgrade to G4, get your Fenrir bonus from the Jormungandr shop, and then start building and fighting Fenrir with upgraded troops. It should be very easy to gain a ton of coins. DO NOT SPEND THE COINS NOW.  The game always has the same price for every item, but the quantity goes up based on your Guardsmen level at the beginning of the tournament. When the next Ragnarok begins, the shop will have bigger rewards for the exact same price.  One of the best things to get is cheap VP for your next troop upgrade.

JORMUNGANDER (1ST)

Always begin by attacking the snake, because in his shop you can purchase a strength bonus against Fenrir.  You have to go on clan raids against Jormungander often enough to get the coins needed to purchase the bonus, and only then should you start on the wolf.

For the raids you’ll need a minimum of 2 members and a maximum of 5 in the raid.  The most important factor in the number of points you score on a raid is the number of separate attacks on the monster, and this is determined by how many different types of troops are sent.  When sending troops to join a raid, aim for a minimum of 12 troop layers.  Ideally, as a raid organizer you should aim for at least 16 different silver troops (guardsman, specialists), 8 different monster troops and 8 different mercenaries. DO NOT HESITATE TO CANCEL A RAID if you don’t have sufficient strength or numbers to win.  Try again and explain, gently and kindly if possible, that you’re trying to maximize VP for everyone in the raid, and they need to send at least 12 different troop layers to do that.  They’ll see the results eventually.

FENRIR (2ND)

Again: DO NOT start on the wolf until you purchase the strength bonus in the Jormungander event shop!! This will increase your score significantly... Also, before starting to hit Fenrir, take a peek at your personal goals and try to set a stop point where you’ll be happy with what you get.  It is tempting to keep hitting until you have nothing left, but again, try to play within your limit. Be smart with your troops. ALSO: Fenrir lasts for 2 days, and the second day always coincides with the Immortal Essence tournament. Save some troops and resources for the 2nd day so that you can maximize the Immortal Essence rewards (hard to come by and sooo important for Hall of Fame advancement). ALSO: don’t forget to buy the XP, VP, Health bonuses in Fenrir’s shop. They last for 7 days each and are worth the minimal cost in coins.

Doomsday Guide

Personally I don’t love Doomsday,  but I’ve been told by people more experienced than I am that Doomsday is a great way to level up captains and gain VP and XP, as well as the rarely attainable immortal essence.

Send spears, riders, mercs and monsters.  Layer troops, trying to make sure that your spearmen have the highest health points of all the groups you send.  You want them hitting first. Riders are your hit squad, so have their health a little lower than spearmen’s, then mercs and monsters a little lower again, so they hit last.

Clan Hunts for Heroics (Ongoing)

Heroic hunts are a great way to quickly obtain resources needed for upgrading clan buildings, activating clan bonuses, and conducting clan research.  You can focus the hunt on materials needed for whatever your clan objective is at that moment.  While a powerful player can take out heroic monsters on their own, it is usually done as a clan march.  Players can send reinforcements to the leader of the raids, who can use all of the troops as a giant army to kill heroics.  There is no limit to the number of players that can tag along on raids, but strong players working together can take out the highest value heroics.

Heroic Monster Attack Guide

It is important to note that the leader of the Clan Hunt is usually taking the brunt of the damage, and if you’re coming along for the ride it is recommended to send them as much silver as you can spare during the hunt.

Timing hunts to coincide with Reckless Slaughter (when all troops can be revived with silver) is recommended.

FOR SMALLER PLAYERS:  riding along on a heroic raid is exciting and can be VERY beneficial.  Whatever captain you send along with get huge boosts to their levels (try to send Amanitore), and you can hit a lot of your “Achievements” for killing higher level monsters than you ever could on your own.  The first few times you go along can feel like magic.  I can attest to that.  Always make sure you ask the leader of the raid if you can go along, and show your gratitude with silver. The leader is usually losing more than you could make in a month of mining.

Sending the right troops for the level of monster is VERY important in heroics. So follow clan chat and check with the leader to see if they only want you sending certain types of troops.

Trade Routes (Merc Exchange)

During the tournament, Mercenary Exchanges will appear in all Kingdoms. Players will be able to send their Captains to Exchanges in other Kingdoms to buy mercenaries in exchange for Silver.  You can only send marches to an Exchange if your City has a Caravan building.

Finding an Exchange on the map is no easy task: Join player chats about Exchanges and get the coordinates from them, and don't forget to share the coordinates if an Exchange appears near your City. Each Exchange has several offers available for purchase. The selection of available offers refreshes every seven hours. Clicking on the Exchange building will show the progress bar:

There can be up to 7 exchanges (more is possible its simply the maximum we have found) on any kingdom. Once you've found one or have old coordinates - try looking in a circular motion around there have been up to 3 spawns in a circle that. Use the coordinates to find another. Example:

  1. Merc Exchange found at k56 x197 y860
  2. try: x800 y200
  3. try x200 y200
  4. try: x800 y200
  5. Check directly across it - either side ways or down/up

Most common spawns are in each of the corners and their area - take this broadly so a corner is the entire area in radius of 200 points per x and y.

Exchanges reset after 2 hours if not found and max 20 minutes when all are completed.6. middle section start top or bottom and work it down - if they spawn there this is your best bet.

How Merc Exchanges Work

After you have found a Merc Exchange, send Tengel (with Drum with Silver to the Exchange. The Silver is deducted as soon as the Captain starts the march. If the Captain can make it to the Exchange before it sells out (most often in a matter of minutes), you can see what mercs are available to purchase. Make a selection quickly, because the clock is ticking. Look for Fire Lords, Wyverns, and other high value mercs.

New troops are hired the moment the Captain arrives at the Exchange, and a notification of the purchase will appear in the Journal, showing the number of mercenaries and event points that were acquired.

The Captain returns to the City with the new mercenaries.

If, for some reason, the troops were not successfully hired, the Silver will be returned to the City when the Captain returns.
Next to each item in the Exchange, you can see the points that you'll get if you make the relevant purchase. The player's ranking will be calculated based on these points at the end of the event.
Exchange chats:     Exchange, Exchange (Moderated), moderated exchange, exchange, mercenary exchange, SALES, MERCENARY by Chamizo, mercenary exchange, xxx italian mercenari, mercenary exchange, Mercenary exchange, EXCHANGE, Mercenary Exchange, Mercenary EXCHANGEs, MERCENARY EXCHANGE, SALE (Moderated), MercsEx, mercenary EXCHANGE
The very last one has been reliable lately, but new ones pop up all the time.
PRO TIP:    It’s best to find exchanges by scanning kingdoms yourself and finding ones that aren’t yet posted, because once posted they go like wildfire.  BUT, they usually spawn in pairs in a kingdom, so if one pops up in one of the chats, it might be worth scanning that kingdom to try to find the 2nd one that might not have been reported.

Clash of Kingdoms (CoK)

Clash of Kingdoms is a Kingdom vs. Kingdom event where players from different kingdoms battle to capture and hold banners. These banners accrue points for their respective kingdoms. The goal is to collect as many banners as possible and defend them to earn rewards and prestige for your kingdom.
